Abby Kersey and Kayla Vasquez didn’t drop a set and won the girls’ No. 3 doubles state championship on Saturday in Gillette.

Kersey (Jr.) and Vasquez (Sr.) won all four of their matches in straight set to capture the title. In the championship, they defeated the team of Strange and Brown from Green River, 6-2 and 6-2.

The Laramie tandem opened state last Thursday with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over a team from Jackson. They followed that with a 6-2 and 6-1 win over a tandem from Torrington.

That put Kersey and Vasquez into the semifinals, where they faced Nokes and Catchpole from Kelly Walsh, the No. 2 seed and North Region champs, on Friday. The first set went to a tie-breaker but Laramie pulled it out, 7-6. It was 7-5 in the tie break. It was another battle in set two, but Kersey and Vasquez prevailed 7-5.

The duo’s state title helped the Laramie Lady Plainsmen finish in fifth place at the state tournament with 24 team points. Senior Kylee Cox added a fourth-place finish at No. 2 singles.

The Laramie boys had a struggle at the state tournament. They took 10th place and scored just 6.5 team points.

The No. 2 doubles team of Marcos Johnson-Noya and Walter Wiederholt reached the consolation semifinals. They finished with a 3-2 record at the state tournament. No one else in the Plainsmen’s line-up made it past a third match.

Lady Plainsmen Volleyball

Laramie remained undefeated on the season with two wins in the Cheyenne Volleyball Duals on Friday and Saturday.

Laramie (10-0) beat Evanston at home on Friday night, 25-13 and 25-12. Since the matches are part of a “tournament,” it was best two out of three sets. Alexis Stucky had nine kills, 13 digs, and four service aces for LHS. Morgann Jensen added eight kills on offense.

Saturday in Cheyenne, the Lady Plainsmen topped Cheyenne Central, 25-16 and 25-14. Alexis Stucky had 14 kills and Morgann Jensen added six to lead Laramie.

Their second match in Cheyenne on Saturday against No. 5 East was canceled due to very poor air quality because of smoke and haze from the Mullen Fire that had drifted east.

Laramie returns to the court with a conference match versus Cheyenne South at home on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
