The 2026 high school football season begins on Friday night. The Laramie Plainsmen travel to Casper to face the fifth-ranked Natrona County Mustangs at Cheney Alumni Field. The game will start at 7 p.m. You can listen to live coverage from KOWB Radio starting at 6 p.m.

KOWB PREVIEWS GAME NO. 1 AT NATRONA COUNTY

Laramie went 3-7 last year and fell in the first round of the 4A playoffs to eventual runner-up Campbell County. Three of those losses were by 10 points or less. That included a 19-13 postseason setback to the Camels in Gillette.

The Plainsmen are an experienced group entering the 2026 season. They return 22 varsity players from last fall. Laramie has five returning starters on offense and seven on defense. This team has higher expectations this season than it's had for several years.

Third-year head coach Jake Chick likes this group. He feels the program is in a different spot compared to his first two years. He's excited about how this team has prepared for the new season, believes they've developed good players over his first two years, provided his thoughts on their first opponent, the Natrona County Mustangs, and more.

The drought is at 21 and counting

Laramie has not beaten Natrona County in football since 2001. The last Plainsmen win in Casper over NC was the 1994 title game. They have not had a winning record since 2000. The journey to change all that begins tonight.

KOWB Radio (AM 1290) will provide live coverage of the 2026 season opener at Natrona County. Coverage will start at 6 p.m. Join David Settle and Dan Bleak for the broadcast call. You can listen on the radio, through the KOWB app, online, and on smart speakers.
