Plainsmen are Looking for Playoff Redemption [VIDEO]
The post-season of Wyoming high school football has arrived. The Laramie Plainsmen are seeking an elusive first round victory.
Laramie (3-6) hasn’t won a playoff game in 15 years. They haven’t beaten their opponent since 1996, and it’s been 20 years since they topped them in the playoffs.
Gillette (9-0) is a prohibitive favorite going in to Friday night’s game. Just two weeks ago, the Camels used big plays in the passing game and defeated the Plainsmen, 51-16. Gillette had 11 plays that went for 15 yards or more. Senior Q-B Dalton Holst threw for 348 yards and five touchdowns.
The Camels used four scores, two on either side of halftime and broke the game open, so that the running clock, mercy rule came into play.
Laramie head coach Chuck Syverson knows this isn’t the best match-up, but he believes his squad can compete a lot better.
Syverson told KOWB’s David Settle, the ‘voice of the Plainsmen,’ what has to change in this match-up; what he took away from the first meeting about the Camels; what they might change; having some more confidence going in; and trying to pull the giant upset.
For the second straight meeting, the big match-up will be how Laramie handles the Gillette aerial attack. The Camels have the number one pass offense in the state, averaging 268 yards per game. By contrast, the Plainsmen have the 10th-ranked pass defense in 4-A. L-H-S gives up 215.8 yards per game and 26 scores through the air.
It’s the 1 versus 8 match-up in the first round of the Class 4-A playoffs. The Laramie Plainsmen face the Camels in Gillette. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.
KOWB (AM 1290) will air the game with coverage starting at 4:30 p.m. David Settle and VerDon Hoopes will provide the call the action.
