The third fall sport to reach its postseason will be high school cross country, as Laramie heads to Rock Springs for the 4A West Conference Championships.

Laramie will compete against Rock Springs, Green River, Evanston, Natrona, and Kelly Walsh Friday afternoon.

Asked if the change to the West, instead of staying in the East Conference was an issue, Laramie head coach Greg Schabron said not really.

“For especially the guys’ team, and a couple members of the girls’ team, but more for the guys’ team, it’s actually a benefit because more of the stronger teams this year are in the West. So we get to see them one more time before state and possibly make any adjustments we need to and kind of identify what runners these kids have to focus on.”

Schabron said the Evanston and Natrona boys will present some tough competition. The Laramie girls have to look out for the Natrona girls.

As for the course at White Mountain Golf Course, Schabron said he’ll make sure they check it out thoroughly before the race.

“It wasn’t real well-marked last time we were there, and a lot of kids didn’t understand that, so that’s going to be our focal point for at least that race strategy, so they have every advantage they can.”

The 4A West Conference Cross Country Championships start at 1 p.m.

Lady Plainsmen Swimming and Diving

Laramie will be hosting two big days of action at the LHS Aquatics Center with the Laramie Pre-Invite and Laramie Invitational Friday and Saturday.

With the state championships just three weeks away, most teams want to get an opportunity to compete at the venue they’ll be at for state.

Laramie coach Tom Hudson said this is why it will be a very busy weekend.

“This is the biggest meet in the state every year because all the 3A and 4A teams converge into one town. This year it happens to be Laramie. The coaches got together and voted and decided wherever the state meet was, that’s where they wanted this meet to be. We expect 20 of the 25 teams to be here this weekend, primarily on Saturday. About three-quarters of them will be here Friday, as well, so big, big meet.”

To make it an even bigger competition, there will be a boys’ club meet going on at the same time Saturday.

The Pre-Invite starts at 2 p.m. Friday. It is not scored. The Laramie Invitational, which is scored, will be Saturday at 8 a.m.

Laramie has 18 state qualifiers. Hudson said his main goal will be to add to that this weekend.

Lady Plainsmen Volleyball

After not competing since last Tuesday, Oct. 2, the Laramie Lady Plainsmen go back on the road for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday.

Laramie (16-8) has cross-quadrant matches against the two teams from the Northeast they haven’t played yet, in Natrona and Sheridan. The Lady Plainsmen face the Fillies in Casper at 6 p.m. Friday. They play the Broncs Saturday at noon in Sheridan.

LHS is ranked No. 4 in the latest Wyopreps.com Coaches and Media Poll that came out Thursday. They will wrap up the regular season next week.
