For the third year, the Wyoming State High School Football Championships will be held in War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. Five championship games will be played on November 11th and 12th in a great opportunity to showcase Laramie and the University of Wyoming.

UW and the Albany County Tourism Board host the event. Prior to the 2009 Championships, each class would hold the championship game at the home field of the highest seeded team. That meant the games were spread out across the state, stretching WHSAA resources and making it difficult for media to provide coverage of all five games.

Last spring, the WHSAA commited to holding the football championships in Laramie through 2013 over a bid from Sheridan. With 10 football teams, their coaches, families and fans from around the state flowing into Laramie for the event, the success of the event is dependent on community wide support.

Fred Ockers, the executive director of the Albany County Tourism Board, says the event has and will continue to have a positive economic impact on the community. In addition, Ockers acknowledges it as an opportunity to treat the Wyoming High School athletes like the champions they are. For most of the players, this will be their only chance to play in a facility of such high quality.

Ockers encourages the community get involved through either sponsorship packages or simply purchasing game tickets to help insure that the Championships remain in Laramie. He is confident they have everything in place to guarantee that football championships will continue to be successful and provide a lasting memory for all.
