Wyoming High School Girls Basketball Rankings: Jan. 25, 2018
History has been made in the new coaches/media rankings for girls basketball.
In their first year of existence, Thunder Basin has climbed to the top of the 4A rankings. The Lady Bolts needed 4 extra minutes to beat former #1 Cheyenne East, but it was worth it. Meanwhile, the Lady Thunderbirds drop to #2 and share that spot with Campbell County. Both teams play each other Saturday in Cheyenne. Saturday could also be a first battle in the west, as #5 Kelly Walsh visits #4 Evanston.
3A continues to be dominated by #1 Douglas and #2 Lyman. Buffalo holds at #3 and just dodged a bullet in their make-up game on Tuesday at Rawlins, while Powell moves up to #4. There is a lot of debate on #5. Star Valley beat Mountain View last week, yet the Lady Buffalos stay in the top 5, by 2 votes ahead of the Lady Braves. There will be a rematch next month.
The 2A rankings should see a shake-up next week. The reason is because most of the ballots had already been cast, before #1 Lusk lost at unranked Pine Bluffs back on Tuesday. If #2 Greybull doesn't slip up this weekend, the Lady Buffalos should move up. Elsewhere, Rocky Mountain and Wyoming Indian hold stead at #3 and #4 respectively, heading into their various conference games this weekend. Sundance is now in at #5.
You could say one team managed to win for losing last week in 1A. Unranked Farson-Eden went on the road and managed to take #1 Cokeville into double overtime, before coming up short. that impressed the voters enough to put the Lady Pronghorns in at #5 ahead of former #5 Rock River. As for the other 4 spots, they are unchanged from last week. The Lady Panthers retain their #1 spot, followed by Encampment, Little Snake River and St. Stephens. LSR has a tough task ahead of them this weekend, playing Cokeville and Farson-Eden back-to-back on the road.
