Will The Broncos Play A “Black Anthem” Before The National Anthem?
Will the Denver Broncos play the "Black Anthem" before the National Anthem?
According to ESPN, a source said that every week 1 National Football League (NFL) game will play "Lift Ev'ry Voice And Sing", also known as the Black national anthem, before "The Star-Spangled Banner".
The Broncos take on the Titans for the first game of the 2020 season (Sept. 14 8:10 p.m. MTN), so does this mean that two anthems will play when that game occurs?
The league is also "considering a variety of other measures during the upcoming season to recognize victims of police brutality", according to ESPN. This may include listing victims names on uniforms as helmet decals or jersey patches, and the creation of educational programs about victims.
The NFL pledged to increase its social justice footprint and over a 10-year period will donate $250 million.
The league hopes its efforts demonstrate "a genuine commitment to the public, players and coaches and that player voices continue to be heard," the source wrote in a text message to ESPN. "This is key to educating fans, and becoming a prominent voice in the fight to end racism."
