Cheyenne’s Offense Proves Too Much for the Rangers

The Laramie Rangers lost their home opener to Cheyenne Post 6 Wednesday night by a final score of 20-8 at Cowboy Field.

The 9-inning game was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Rangers’ manager Brandon Ruckman said his squad left too many runners on base. Laramie stranded 12 in the game, which included ten in scoring position.

“That didn’t help us and just made some mistakes at the wrong time. Definitely didn’t hit like we did there (at Cheyenne last week)… It just felt like we lacked the energy we usually have.”

Cheyenne (9-0) grabbed an early lead they never relinquished. They scored six times in the first inning. Laramie rallied with a run in the first, a run in the second and three in the third inning. That trimmed it to 6-5.

Post 6 the next nine runs over three innings and extended to a 15-5 lead. Five more in the seventh inning closed out Cheyenne’s victory. They pounded out 19 hits and took advantage of eight walks and nine stolen bases.

Ruckman said, “Couldn’t keep the runners from stealing. We couldn’t keep ‘em at first base, and we struggled with controlling the run game.”

The Rangers 10-hit attack was led by Harrison Yates and Albert Steiner with two hits apiece. Wes Yerty and Will Yates had two RBI’s apiece. Harrison Yates started and took the loss on the mound.

Laramie (0-2) goes back on the road Sunday for a doubleheader at Rock Springs Archie Hay Post 24. The twin bill is slated for a noon start.
