Laramie Rangers Host Annual Dooley Oil Classic Baseball Tournament
The 16th edition of the Dooley Oil Classic baseball tournament, hosted by the Laramie Rangers, is Thursday through Sunday at Cowboy Field. Laramie’s Single-A team is also in this year’s field. The Rangers welcome two more teams from Wyoming and four regional opponents from Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota for weekend action.
The tournament is a modified round-robin. Besides the Rangers AA and A teams, the rest of the tournament field is the Billings Expos from Montana, the Outlaw Baseball Club from Miles City, Montana, the Greeley Grays from Colorado, and the Dakota Kings from Rapid City, South Dakota. The other two in-state squads are the Rock Springs Stallions and Torrington Tigers.
Laramie manager Aaron Lozano feels better about this year’s tournament.
“We’ve kind of struggled to fill the Dooley (tournament) the last couple of years. We kind of want to do a better job for the Dooleys. They’ve been sponsoring this tournament for years, decades at this point. So, to get some good teams back (in the field), and looking at a team like the Billings Expos, coming all the way from Montana, it’s pretty exciting.”
KOWB’s David Settle caught up with one player from the Laramie AA and Laramie A teams. They happen to be brothers, Trace and Tripp Looney.
The Rangers are 12-19 in the 2025 season. They are coming off a 1-4 weekend in Rapid City, SD, at the Black Hills Veterans Classic. Laramie lost to Pierre, SD (4-1), Rapid City Post 22 Split Squad (2-1 in 8 innings), Rapid City Post 22 Hardhats (5-0), and Outlaw Baseball Club (6-5). Their lone victory last weekend was 9-3 over Gering, NE.
Lozano said, “I think we played really well. Unfortunately, the record doesn’t say that, but losing games 6-5, 2-1 in extras, 4-1 to a really good Pierre team, and 5-nothing to a really good Post 22 team, I was pleased with the way the guys went out and competed.”
The Laramie Rangers A squad is 12-14 this year. They come off a conference split at home on Wednesday against Wheatland. They have dropped five of their last seven entering the tournament.

The Rangers AA will face the Billings Expos and Outlaw Baseball Club in back-to-back games on Thursday at 5 and 7:30 p.m. They will play the Greeley Grays on Friday and the Rock Springs Stallions on Saturday. Both start at 7 p.m. The final matchup will be against the Dakota Kings at 10:15 on Sunday morning.
The Rangers A squad will play Rock Springs at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. They take on the Outlaw Baseball Club at 10 a.m. on Friday. Laramie A has a make-up conference doubleheader against Torrington on Sunday, starting at 12:30 p.m.
KOWB radio will broadcast all of the Laramie Rangers AA games live this weekend. We will also air the Friday morning Laramie Rangers A game. Coverage starts 15 minutes before the first pitch. You can listen on the radio at AM 1290, through the KOWB app, online, and through smart speakers. David Settle will call the games.
