Wyoming High School Soccer Rankings: March 22, 2017
Not every team started their season this past weekend, but enough teams played for the coaches and media to assemble the first rankings of the season.
It was a close vote on top of 4A boys. Campbell County starts the season at #1, by 1 vote ahead of #2 Cheyenne East. After that there's a pretty big gap in the voting between those 2 and #3 Natrona. The Mustangs are followed by Rock Springs and Cheyenne Central, who are not far behind at #4 and #5 respectively. The Indians and Thunderbirds were scheduled to play each other on Friday, but due to the approaching snowstorm, the contest was moved up 1 day. Defending champ Laramie played their first game Tuesday night, but most of the votes had already been cast by the time the game ended. As a results, the Plainsmen are not ranked, but they will get opportunities to prove themselves.
The new team in 3A has the bulls-eye on their back to start out. Last year's 4A runner-up Riverton is ranked #1. Depending on weather and road conditions, the Wolverines are schedule to host Laramie in a rematch of last year's 4A state championship game. #2 Cody missed the #1 spot by 1 vote, but it's early in the season. #3 Lander will start their season this weekend at #4 Torrington, and the TrailBlazers will have a couple of games under the belts by then. Buffalo rounds out the top 5, and will host 4A opponents, Sheridan #1 Campbell County this weekend.
In 4A Girls, Campbell County put on a pretty dominating performance over the weekend, and are rewarded with the first #1 ranking of the season. Rock Springs impressed voters to be ranked #, but the Lady Tigers just lost to #5 Jackson, and most of the votes had been cast by then. Last year's 3A champs has 3 conference game this weekend, and will head back to Casper to play Natrona and Kelly Walsh. Meanwhile Laramie and Cheyenne East claim the #3 and #4 rankings, early in the season.
The top 4 teams in Girls 3A are pretty solid. After that it's anyone guess. Cody, Worland and Star Valley occupy the #1, #2 and #3 spots. The season got off to a good start for the Fillies with a road win at SV this past weekend. Buffalo is ranked #4, despite an 0-2 start. As for #5...Riverton and Rawlins share the ranking for now, but there's a number of other teams that can lay claim to that spot as well.
