Trio Propelled Laramie to a Big State Swim Meet
In a dominant performance on the way to a third straight team title, three individuals shined for the Laramie Lady Plainsmen at the 4A State Swim meet last weekend.
Senior Olivia McPherson won her fourth consecutive state championship in the 50 freestyle race. She added a new title with a victory in the 100 breaststroke race. That win was in a state record time of 1:02.65. For her efforts, McPherson was named the ‘Athlete of the Meet’ and ‘Athlete of the Year’ in Class 4A for the second straight year.
Fellow senior Sage Morton won the 500 freestyle by a wide margin, 21 seconds over a teammate. She added a runner-up in the 200 free. Junior Katie McPherson won the 100 freestyle race by more than a second and was runner-up to older sister Olivia in the 50 free.
All three played a key role in LHS’ victory in all three relays.
They spoke to WyoPreps in the video above about the third straight championship as a team, their events, and the dominance Laramie showed. They even gave head coach Tom Hudson a ‘bit of a hard time.’
The two seniors capped their careers and are moving on to swim in college. Olivia McPherson signed at South Carolina, while Morton is headed to the University of Wyoming. Katie McPherson has one more year and could be favored in two events in 2020.
