Today In History for January 18th

On this day back in 1911 the first landing of an aircraft on a ship occurred. Eugene B. Ely landed his Curtis biplane on the USS Pennsylvania in the San Francisco Harbor.

The year was 1943 and it was during World War II that on this day the Soviets announced they had broken through the long Nazi siege of Leningrad. The siege was fully lifted a year later.

After more than forty five hours in the air a trio of B-52 Bombers completed the first non-stop around the world flight by military jets. The trio landed at March Air Force Base in California on this day back in 1957.
