The high school football season is drawing near. This week the Laramie Plainsmen prepared for the start of practice in August with a three-day summer camp.

High school sports teams get a total of 14 days of practice in the “off-season.” The coaching staff of the Laramie Plainsmen has had contact for 10 days after school concluded in late May.

It began when Laramie held a three-day mini-camp June 4-6. Then, they attended a team camp at Black Hills State University June 8-10. Finally, about 40-50 students participated in another three-day mini-camp this week. They finished up today with a leadership and team building session.

Plainsmen head coach Chuck Syverson, who is entering his second season at the helm says there is a benefit to the off-season contact.

“You need to be wise on how you use those days and make sure you’re productive with them because they do go fast. You want to have as much contact with the kids as you can, but still be within the rules.”

He also said he believes they’re smart with what they do and try to get the most of the time they’re with the players.

Syverson also thinks now is a great time to have a camp because of retention of what’s being taught by coaches and learned by players.

“The thing I like about having a later July camp is it gives you a little bit more carry-over going into your August camp… We try and spread them out a little bit; get ‘em a little more repetition; and I think that just gives them better retention going into August (start of practice).”

The Plainsmen are working on some new schemes for the upcoming season.

Syverson said this week was a mix. Get some kids caught up; go over the basics we’ve implemented thus far, but also add a few new things we’re looking at going into fall camp.

The Laramie Plainsmen, and the rest of 4A Wyoming high school football teams, will officially begin practice on Monday, August 11.

The 2014 high school football season starts August 29. Laramie opens at Sheridan against the Broncs.
