Another boys’ state championship in swimming and diving highlighted last weekend’s action for student-athletes at Laramie High School.

The Plainsmen completed their quest for a five-peat in the pool. Also, last weekend saw the LHS Wrestling team place 16 wrestlers in the top eight of the brackets. The Alpine skiing team had a busy weekend with three races.

Laramie Swimming

Laramie won their fifth consecutive Class 4A boys’ state championship in Gillette last Saturday.

It’s the first time in program history that LHS has won five boys’ titles in a row.

They scored 295 points and won by 56 over runner-up Cheyenne Central. Cheyenne South took third.

The Plainsmen had three individual champions.

Senior Mace Spiker-Miller won his third consecutive 100-meter butterfly state title. His winning time was 50.55 seconds, which was two seconds faster than second place.

Senior Dylan Bressler repeated at the 4A state champion in diving. Bressler scored 492.85 points across his 11 dives. Teammate Ronan Robinson took second with a score of 453.40.

The final individual title belonged to senior Collin Fontana. He won the 500-freestyle race in a time of 4:50.51. That beat out his teammate Loden Ewers, who was second at 4:53.03.

The final event won by LHS was the 200-freestyle relay. Laramie touched the wall in 1:29.64.

Spiker-Miller, Bressler, and Fontana earned all-state awards for their victories. They were joined by four teammates Robinson, Ewers, Josh Lui, and Garrett Rees.

Laramie Wrestling

The Plainsmen placed fifth at the 4A West Regional Wrestling Tournament they hosted last Saturday.

Laramie scored 105 points. Natrona County dominated the region with six champions and 274.5 team points.

The Plainsmen finished with 16 placers across the 14 weight classes. That included two second-place efforts from Porter Trabing at 113-pounds and Fischer Hawkins at 138-pounds. Caden Polson at 106 and Dakota Ledford at 132 finished in third place.

LHS is preparing for the state championships on Friday and Saturday at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.

Laramie Alpine Skiing

LHS had three races over two days at Hogadon Basin Ski Area on Casper Mountain.

Due to poor snow conditions at their ski area, the Pinedale Invitational was moved to Casper last weekend. Also, a canceled race from Feb. 11, 2022, at the Cody Invite was made up last Saturday.

In Friday’s GS for the Pinedale Invite, McCrea Doyle placed 15th and Ashton Ford was 14th to lead Laramie. The girls were sixth as a team and the boys were fifth.

In the Pinedale slalom last Saturday, Lina Woelk took tenth place, while Ford was ninth for the boys. The Plainsmen placed fifth as a team, while the girls were sixth.

In the make-up Cody slalom race on Saturday, Woelk was 12th and Ford was ninth. The girls placed fifth as a team, while the boys came in sixth.

Laramie Alpine Skiing is off from any competition this weekend. Their state championships are March 4 and 5, 2022, in Jackson.

Laramie Basketball

Both Laramie teams lost at Cheyenne East last Thursday, and they split at Cheyenne Central last Friday night.

The LHS girls fell to No. 1 East, 56-39. It was a tough second-half that saw the Thunderbirds pull away. Laramie shot just 21 percent from the floor in that half of basketball. Kylin Shipman paced LHS with 12 points and five rebounds.

The boys lost to the No. 3 East, 55-41. It was a four-point game when the Thunderbirds got a big three-pointer that pushed it to seven. Free throws created the final margin for East. Mahlon Morris led the Plainsmen with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Last Friday, the Laramie girls bounced back with a 56-40 victory at Cheyenne Central. They shot 50 percent in the second half and outscored the Indians 22-10 in the final frame. Morgann Jensen scored a career-best 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. Laramie secured the No. 3 seed at next week’s regional basketball tournament in Cheyenne. They are now 13-7 on the season and 6-3 in conference games.

As for the Laramie boys, they trailed 23-19 at halftime but scored only 13 points in the second half. They lost to the fifth-ranked Indians, 51-32. Diego Medina had eight points and four rebounds for LHS. The Plainsmen dropped to 10-10 overall and 2-7 in league play.

Both teams conclude the regular season on Friday night at home versus Cheyenne South. It’s Senior Night for the teams. The girls’ varsity plays at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ varsity at 7:30 p.m.
