Laramie Takes Fourth at Regional Wrestling
The Laramie Plainsmen had four champions crowned and finished fourth in the team standings at the 4A East Regional Wrestling Championships in Cheyenne.
The Plainsmen had seven wrestlers place among the top four and 17 qualified for this week’s state wrestling tournament.
Laramie head coach Mikah Kadera said they put two days together.
“Not the two best days that we’ve had, but the two best days we want to come this weekend. Some guys really showed up and wrestled well, and others didn’t wrestle the greatest, but that’s not the tournament to do it at.”
Seniors Idris Elias, Kaden Schriner and Carless Looney were joined by sophomore Ethan Sell at the top of the podium. Elias rolled through the 126 pound bracket with a tech fall and a pair of major decisions for his title. Schriner won the crown at 145 with two pins and a hard-fought 3-2 decision in the final. Looney recorded a pair of pins and then won a 6-4 decision to grab the title at 195 pounds. Sell was the most dominant, as he won at 106 pounds with all four victories by fall.
Junior Arsenio Lemus at 132 pounds and sophomore Zech Aguilar at 182 both finished as a runner-up. Senior Tony Ortega added a fourth place at 285 pounds.
As a team, Laramie scored 159.5 points and came within 0.5 points of third place. Gillette won the team title with 247 points. Cheyenne East was second at 179, while Sheridan finished with 160 points. Cheyenne South took fifth with Cheyenne Central sixth.
The State Wrestling Championships will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25 at the Casper Events Center.
