The 4th-ranked Laramie Lady Plainsmen opened 4A East Conference play with a 3-1 victory over #2 Gillette Friday.

Sophomore Courtney Hamilton scored twice, while fellow sophomore Sekoya Romero scored what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Head coach Kim Whisenant said the first half was a little dodgy and weren't sure what we needed to do and what to expect from Gillette.

"Once we settled down and let our nerves kind of calm, in the second half, we kind of rose to the occasion. We played as a team; played with a lot of gusto; and I was really proud of the girls' effort today."

Hamilton was tackled in the box and drew a penalty kick midway through the first half. She converted with a shot to the lower right corner of the net that made it 1-0 in the 18th minute.

Hamilton said, "I got up there, and I had to walk it through my mind. I can make it. I had to be confident."

Gillette answered right back with a goal from Emma Jurewicz in the 19th minute.

Late in the first half, the Lady Plainsmen scored the game-winning goal. Junior Caitlyn Cox made a run down the right side and fed the ball across. Romero ran onto it and put it past the Camels keeper for a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute. That was the score at half.

Laramie got insurance in the 73rd minute. Off a corner kick from Paige Trent, Hamilton played the bounce and hooked one into the back of the net for a 3-1 advantage.

Hamilton added, "We've worked really hard on corners (kicks) in practice, and I've been spending a lot of time on my volley's. I just connected really well with Paige (Trent) today."

The Lady Plainsmen hang on for the 3-1 win and improve to 3-0 on the season. They are 1-0 in the 4A East. Laramie will face #3 Sheridan Saturday at noon.
