Giants Destroy Rockies – MLB Roundup

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Royals continue to hold a half-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League East after both teams won on Tuesday.

Salvador Perez singled home the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning to lift the Royals past Texas 2-1. Jarrod Dyson reached first base on a fielder's choice and stole second and third before scoring the game-winning run.

Mark Guthrie settled for a no-decision after holding the Rangers to a run and eight hits in seven innings.

The Tigers kept pace with a 4-2 victory at Cleveland, thanks to a three-run homer by J.D. Martinez in the ninth inning. Detroit starter Kyle Lobstein gave up a two-run homer by Carlos Santana but just four other hits while striking out 10 in 5 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, St. Louis tacked another game onto their NL Central lead, moving two games ahead of Milwaukee with a 6-4 triumph against Pittsburgh. Adam Wainwright became the year's fourth 16-game winner and helped his own cause with a two-run single and three RBIs. Pat Neshek (NEE'-shehk) closed out the victory as the Redbirds dropped the Pirates four games off the division lead.

The Brewers absorbed their seventh consecutive loss as Arismendy Alcantara (ar-his-MEHN'-dee al-KAHN'-tah-rah) hit a two-run homer and scored twice in the Chicago Cubs' 7-1 romp over Milwaukee. Jake Arrieta allowed a run and five hits in six innings versus the Brewers, who led their division by 2 ½ games on August 19 before dropping 10 of their last 12.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Clayton Kershaw is the season's first 17-game winner after limiting Washington to a run and three hits with eight strikeouts over eight innings of the Dodgers' 4-1 win over the Nationals in Los Angeles. Kershaw blanked the Nats until Bryce Harper hit a two-out homer in the seventh. Juan Uribe (yoo-REE'-bay) smacked a two-run shot as the Dodgers kept their two-game lead over San Francisco in the NL West.

— Buster Posey was 3-for-5 with a solo homer, four RBIs and three runs scored to help San Francisco turn a 6-0 deficit into a 12-7 romp over the Rockies. Andrew Susac added a two-run homer and three RBIs to the Giants' seventh victory in eight games.

— Houston ended the Angels' six-game winning streak as Jose Altuve (al-TOO'-vay) went 4-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBIs and two runs scored in the Astros' 8-3 dismantling of Los Angeles. Robbie Grossman added three hits and an RBI to back Brad Peacock, who held the Angels to two earned runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

— The Angels still lead the AL West by 4 1/2 games after second-place Oakland fell behind 6-0 in a 6-5 loss to Seattle. Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer and Endy Chavez and Austin Jackson drove in two runs apiece to help the Mariners stay 1 1/2 games behind Detroit for the final AL wild-card berth.

— Bud Norris allowed four hits in six scoreless innings before Baltimore blew most of a 5-0 lead in a 5-4 win over Cincinnati. Jonathan Schoop (skohp) hit a solo homer to help the Orioles stretch their lead in the AL East to 9 1/2 games over the New York Yankees.

— Daniel Nava hit a three-run homer while the Boston Red Sox were building an early 6-0 lead in a 9-4 trouncing of the Yankees in the Bronx. Xander Bogaerts (ZAN'-dur BOH'-gahts) and Mookie Betts also went deep as the Bosox dropped the Yankees five games behind Detroit for the final AL wild-card berth.

— Philadelphia has followed its combined no-hitter against Atlanta with a 4-0 shutout of the Braves. Kyle Kendrick scattered three hits in seven shutout innings against the Braves, who've scored just once in their last four games and remain seven games behind the NL East-leading Nationals.

— Jose Reyes ripped a three-run homer and R.A. Dickey allowed two hits in seven innings of Toronto's 8-2 pounding of Tampa Bay. Dioner (dee-AH'-nur) Navarro hit a two-run homer and Danny Valencia added a solo shot in the Blue Jays' third straight win.

— Juan Lagares (lah-GAH'-rehs) and David Wright combined for seven hits and five RBIs as the New York Mets outscored Miami 8-6. Lagares was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Wright drove in three runs while collecting three hits.

— Tyler Flowers hit a pair of two-run homers and Dayan Viciedo (vih-see-EH'-doh) delivered the tiebreaking, solo blast in the 10th inning of the Chicago White Sox's 6-3 win at Minnesota. The White Sox's bullpen worked four hitless innings of shutout relief.

— San Diego beat Arizona 2-1 on Cory Spangenburg's pinch-hit, solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Padres are 40-29 at home but five games under .500 overall.

UNDATED (AP) — Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo could be done for the rest of the season because of a strained lower back that was discovered through an MRI on Tuesday.

Rizzo was hurt on Aug. 26 and has been out of the lineup for a week. The 25-year-old All-Star is hitting .278 with 30 home runs and 71 RBIs.

— New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka (mah-sah-HEE'-roh tah-NAH'-kah) plans to throw a bullpen session this week, the next step for the injured right-hander as he tries to overcome a recent setback. New York manager Joe Girardi said Tanaka threw well Tuesday, and team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad diagnosed the right-hander with arm fatigue. Tanaka is hoping to avoid Tommy John surgery and hasn't pitched since July 9 because of a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament.

— Michael Wacha (WAH'-kah) will return to the St. Louis Cardinals' rotation Thursday against the Brewers in Milwaukee, although manager Mike Matheny will limit him to around 60 pitches. Wacha was 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 15 starts this season before landing on the 15-day disabled list in June with a right shoulder stress reaction.

— Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez will be out of the lineup at least a week because of a sprained left wrist suffered in Sunday's loss at San Francisco. The Brewers say Gomez isn't going on the disabled list, although manager Ron Roenicke (REHN'-ih-kee) admits the injury could potentially keep Gomez out of the lineup for a couple of weeks.
