The time has arrived for the Wyoming high school football playoffs. In class 4A first round action, the Laramie Plainsmen will be at the Gillette Camels.

Laramie (3-6) earned the sixth seed after last week's 28-7 victory at Kelly Walsh. The head-to-head tie-breaker gave the Plainsmen a higher seed than the Trojans. It is also an improvement by one seed for LHS over last year.

Gillette (7-2) comes in as the third seed. They finished in a three-way tie for second and were one of the two teams to win the coin flip. Then, it came down to head-to-head, and since Cheyenne East defeated the Camels, Gillette got the third seed.

With everyone playing each other in the regular season in class 4A, it's nothing but rematches in the playoffs.

The Camels were in Laramie just two weeks ago and spoiled Laramie's senior night with a 48-32 victory. Gillette scored on their first five drives in route to a 34-14 lead at halftime. LHS made a push in the second half, but fell short. The Camels out-gained the Plainsmen 517-to-296 in total offense.

Laramie High School head football coach Chuck Syverson says there's a benefit to having played the Camels so recently.

"It gives us a chance to kind of build upon what we did the last time we played 'em; make our adjustments and go forward from there. Guys are familiar with what they do, so it's a little less teaching; just gives us a chance to hone in on what they did well against us and try and take that away."

KOWB's David Settle was able to visit with coach Syverson this week. He discussed the improvement in seeding, going on the road, facing Gillette and what they learned from that first game two weeks ago.

Laramie and Gillette are playing in the playoffs against each other for the first time since the 4A state title game in Laramie back in 2000. The Plainsmen are only 1-5 all-time in the post-season against the Camels according to wyoming-football.com.

Gillette has won 12 straight in the series and the last three in the playoffs. They possess the top offense (421.6 yards per game), top passing attack (251 ypg) and top passer, in senior quarterback Cale Miessler (201.2 ypg) in 4A high school football.

Laramie will counter with a balanced attack that averages 156.8 yards per game on the ground (6th in 4A) and 138.6 through the air (7th in 4A). Senior Andy Pearson is third in rushing at 101.9 yards per game and leads class 4A with 17 touchdowns.

The Plainsmen will try for their first ever football playoff victory in Gillette, when they take on the 3rd-ranked Camels Friday night. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.
