The high school football season has opened up for Laramie High School with fall camp in full swing.

Laramie started last Monday, Aug. 10 with their first practice session. They went two-a-days last Monday through Friday, and also had a practice last Saturday. The Plainsmen have been going through an acclimation period where they started with no pads. Then they progressed to shells and finally got into full pads on Monday, Aug. 17.

Fourth-year head coach Clint Reed has been very pleased with practice through six days.

“The numbers are good. The exciting piece was and the surprising piece was how many we had at the freshman and sophomore levels. Maybe we’re getting the message out there. We’re getting that culture going a little bit. I did not expect those numbers down there.”

The roster features 31 juniors and seniors with 47 freshmen and sophomores.

“It’s allowed us to form a couple of squads on the field, as far as competition goes, as far as scrimmaging goes, as far as just competing against each other,” said Reed.

Before fall camp began, KOWB’s David Settle had a chance to visit with Coach Reed and senior Isaac Sell about the offseason, adjustments for COVID-19, looking forward to this new season, and more.

Through the first week of practice, the focus has been on the installation of the team’s offense and defense, as the systems were tweaked in the off-season. Reed said things have gone smoothly.

“Honestly, the defense was installed by Thursday, and by Saturday morning, we’ve basically got about 90 percent of the offense in.”

Reed’s talking alignments and formations. He added they’ll back and add the movement, the motions, and any unique pieces in the coming weeks. They also plan to dive deep into special teams during week two.

How was week one according to a couple of seniors? KOWB’s David Settle talked with Julian Cortez and Colter Nunn about the first six days of action. Both are not only happy to be playing, but they see some good things going on.

Reed added that they’re taking a slower approach because of the virus situation. He admitted they aren’t even in their locker room yet. The coaching staff is making sure things are cleaned, they’re getting the players the right equipment, making sure everyone has their own water and are staying hydrated.

“Now we’re looking for a little tempo, a little intensity, see where the physicality starts to step up next week (in week two).”

The Plainsmen make their 2020 season debut at defending 4A state champion Sheridan on Friday, Aug. 28. The game will kick-off at 6 p.m.
