Laramie Wrestling Hosts Cheyenne Central on Thursday Night
The Laramie Plainsmen wrestling team has their only home dual match of the season tonight at Laramie High School.
The Plainsmen square off against Cheyenne Central. The JV starts at 5 p.m. with the varsity scheduled for 6 p.m. Senior recognition will be before the varsity matches.
Head coach Stuart Brink is feeling good about his young squad’s performance lately.
“The last few weeks, we’ve really noticed our guys are going out there and battling. They might not come away with the ‘W,’ but they’re going out there and working hard.”
Laramie had an earlier home dual scratched because of weather, and Brinkman told KOWB that it will not be rescheduled.
That means tonight is the lone home dual and Senior Night. LHS has one senior in Aya Klaibou.
Brinkman said, “It’s a weird feeling (only 1 senior) and also a good feeling in a sense. We have Aya (as a senior), one of our girls. This is her first year (wrestling). She’ll be walking out during Senior Night, and then one of our managers. The good feeling is we get everybody back next year, and we have some really tough kids, and kids that really like to work hard. So, I’m kind of excited to see what comes.”
The Plainsmen have five wrestlers ranked among the top seven of their weight class in the latest WyoWrestling.com rankings. Laramie’s Avianca Guzman is atop her weight division (110) in the girls’ rankings.
After last weekend’s Thoman-Jackman Dual Tournament in Green River, where LHS went 4-3 and took seventh place, Brinkman is looking forward to a test from Cheyenne Central.
“They’re a really tough team this year. They have a lot of returning state placers, and returning state champs. I’m kind of looking at it going toward every other dual that we’ve had. I want our guys to go out there and compete, battle in every position, win or lose, leave it all out on the mat.”
The Plainsmen have a 7-7 record in dual matches this season.
After the home dual, Laramie heads to the Lander Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
