Laramie Wins District 2 Little League Tournament

The six-time defending Wyoming champion little league team will be returning to the state little league tournament.

The Laramie Little League All-Stars had actually clinched the trip to the state tournament the day before just by advancing to the District 2 championship game, but with a 17-2 win over Gillette in the title game, Laramie locked up their spot as the top seed from the east.

Though the outcome of the game would not deter either team’s berth in the state tournament, redemption was the incentive for Laramie as Gillette had handed them a 9-6 loss to open the District 2 tournament.

Winning the pre-game coin flip, Laramie was the home team in the game, and after a swift defensive stand, they came to the plate aggressively in the first, scoring Blake Moore, Zachariah Aguilar, Reid Baty and Albert Steiner.

Gillette would answer with two runs of their own, but with a 4-2 lead, Laramie would pull away in the second, sending 11 batters to the plate, connecting for 6 hits and 7 runs in the inning. The highlight came with an out and two men on base, when Albert Steiner launched a 3-run homerun over the right-center wall.

Laramie again held Gillette scoreless in the third and once again batted around the lineup in the bottom half, scoring 6 more times off of 6 third inning hits. A final defensive stand in the fourth and Laramie won 17-2.

The winning pitcher for Laramie was Nathan Burman whose command of the strike zone limited Gillette to just two hits in the game. Laramie will enter the state tournament with incredible momentum, having won their final 3 games in the District 2 tournament by more than 11 runs per game.

As far as incredible momentum goes, the Laramie 9 and 10 year old team takes the cake; they too won their District, having outscored all 5 opponents by a combined 46 runs.

The Laramie little league all-stars and the 9 and 10 year old team will next play in the state tournament beginning on Wednesday, July 25.
