The Laramie Plainsmen volleyball team qualified for the state tournament and won their regional quad on Thursday night at Laramie High School.

Laramie (19-0) swept Cheyenne Central to secure their spot at the 4A state volleyball tournament in Casper on Nov. 7. The match scores were 25-12, 25-11, and 25-14. Alexis Stucky had 18 kills and 20 digs for LHS.

Head coach Jill Stucky said she was very proud of the way her team handled the pressure.

“There was a lot on the line in that match, and we came out and we executed really well. I feel like we passed the ball (well). I haven’t seen the stats yet, I haven’t really looked that close, but I’m saying we probably passed around a 2.6 for the match out of a 3, which is amazing, and we were able to get into system all night. I feel like our defense dug a lot of balls. It was just one of those games where you just had to win. It was do or die, and I feel like our team responded really well.”

Alexis Stucky said of the win to qualify for the state tournament, “It was such a relief. We were so glad to get it out of the way, and we just played free in the last (second) game because we were already in.”

Laramie then captured the No. 1 seed from the Southeast Regional Quad for Saturday’s cross-quadrant seeding matches in Casper. They beat Cheyenne East 25-21, 16-25, 25-11, and 25-8.

Alexis Stucky had 19 kills and 20 digs in that victory. Maddy Stucky added 8 kills and 31 assists, while Morgann Jensen contributed 8 kills.

After winning a close first set and then dropping set two, Alexis Stucky said they answered in a big way.

“I think we just got angry. I think we were angry that they scored that many points on us, and we just had to come out with a fire and beat ‘em.”

Coach Stucky said no one was happy with the second set so she put some pressure on her squad and they responded with team pride.

“To be more competitive and to speed their game up and to execute when asked, and carry more responsibility individually, so that we could have a better whole. I felt like the team came out, and they wanted to win desperately, and it was very, very evident in our last two sets.”

Laramie will play two matches on Saturday in Casper just to determine their final seed from the East Region at the state tournament.

Coach Stucky said, “We’re going to spend a lot of time watching video, more of that, probably than anything. We’re looking forward to ways to beat other people that we haven’t seen that much.”

The Plainsmen will play Thunder Basin at 10 a.m. Their next match will either be for third place or the regional title, depending on the outcome of the first match. Saturday’s action will be at Kelly Walsh High School.
