Laramie is hosting the 4A East Conference Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday and Friday at the LHS Natatorium.

The schedule begins with the diving prelims and semifinals at 2 p.m. Thursday. That’s followed by the swimming prelims at approximately 3:30 Thursday afternoon. All the event finals will commence at 10 a.m. Friday.

Laramie head coach Tom Hudson says he likes what he sees out of his team heading into the conference meet.

“We’re an awfully deep team, that’s a trademark of our teams lately, well, forever really. I like our depth. We have some good top-end performers, as well. What I really like is our relays have come together pretty well, and for mid-season swims, we’ve been setting some really fast times.”

That was evident with the 200 freestyle relay setting the meet record at last weekend’s Gillette Invitational. Hudson admitted that was absolutely a surprise.

As for the conference championship, Hudson says Sheridan is the favorite with Laramie second and Central close behind in third.

“It kind of all depends on what the coaches decide to do. In the past, Cheyenne Central and Sheridan have really focused on this meet and have come out really, really well. They wear their fast suits. They’re really ready to have a great conference meet.”

Laramie does not focus on this competition. Hudson’s teams always focus on state, which is two weeks away.

Hudson said his goal is to fill their line-up for the state meet. Laramie currently has 20 state qualifiers going into the conference championships.

The Lady Plainsmen will be competing against Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne South, Gillette, Sheridan and Thunder Basin.
