2021-22 Team Success, Wyoming Posts Three Top Five Finishes Out of Seven Tournaments This Season

The Wyoming Cowboys have posted three Top-5 tournament finishes during the 2021-22 season. Wyoming captured the team championship at its own Wyoming Desert Match Play event in February.

The Cowboys entered the event as the #5 Seed and went on to defeat #4 Seed Denver in the quarterfinals, defeated #1 Seed San Francisco in the semifinals and won the championship match over #2 Seed Boise State.

By finishing fifth out of 17 teams at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in September, Wyoming recorded its second Top 5 finish of the season. The Cowboys also placed 5th out of 21 teams at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite to open the 2021-22 season in September.

Jimmy Dales Named Mountain West Player of the Week, Leads Wyoming to Team Title at Wyoming Desert Match Play and Places Fifth at Prestigious Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase

Wyoming redshirt sophomore Jimmy Dales was named the Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Week on Thursday, Feb. 17. It was the first MW Golfer of the Week honor of Dales’ career.

Playing at the No. 1 position for Wyoming, Dales led the Cowboys to the team title at the inaugural Wyoming Desert Match Play to begin the 2022 spring season on Feb. 11-12 in Palm Desert, Calif.

In the championship match of the Wyoming Desert Match Play, Dales won the deciding match in leading No. 5 seed Wyoming to an upset 3-2-1 win over No. 2 seed Boise State. Dales, playing in the final group of the tournament, birdied the final hole of the match to defeat his opponent 2UP. That win secured the team title for the Cowboys.

Wyoming opened the match-play event as the No. 5 seed out of eight teams. In the opening round, Dales won his match 7&6 to lead the Cowboys to an opening round win over No. 4 seed Denver.

In the semifinals, Dales was part of a Cowboy team that upset the No. 1 seed San Francisco 4-2-0. San Francisco had concluded the 2021 fall season ranked No. 29 in the country by Golfstat.

A native of Northville, Mich., Dales left Wyoming’s win in Palm Desert and traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., to compete in an elite field of 17 of the nation’s top collegiate golfers at the Genesis Invitational College Showcase on Monday, Feb. 14.

The tournament was played at the legendary Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, with the winning golfer earning a spot into Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational. Dales shot an impressive even-par round of 71 at Riviera and finished in fifth place at the 2022 Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase.

The winner of the Collegiate Showcase was Michael Brennan of Wake Forest University. Brennan fired a five-under par 66 to win by two strokes over RJ Manke of the University of Washington, 68 (-3).

Dales has enjoyed an outstanding season in 2021-22. He placed in the Top 25 individuals at five of the six tournaments Wyoming played during the 2021 fall season. Dales also led the Cowboys in stroke average in the fall of 2021, averaging 72.28 strokes per round.
