Albert Steiner and Emmy Johnson Lead Laramie at Regional Track
Senior Albert Steiner and sophomore Emmy Johnson were both part of four wins at the 4A East Regional Track and Field Championships last weekend in Cheyenne.
Senior Albert Steiner put on a show. He won three individual events and was part of a relay title over two days. He beat senior teammate Philip Henry in all three races for a 1-2 LHS finish.
Johnson also puts together a great set of performances with two individual victories, and she was part of two relay wins.
Steiner won the 800 meters last Friday by 3.5 seconds with a time of 1:55.22. He followed that with a victory in the 3200 meters (9:50.14) and was the only runner under 10 minutes. His margin of victory was just over 11 seconds. Saturday, Steiner crossed the finish line first in the 1600 meters (4:30.76) with nearly a five-second victory. He also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x800 meter relay (8:08.44) that posted a 16-second win.
Johnson began last Friday with a leg on the victorious 4x100 meter relay (49.61). She came back Saturday with a win in the 100-meter dash in 13.02 seconds before lunch. In the afternoon, Johnson captured the 300-meter hurdles in 46.34 seconds. She finished off the two days with the lead-off leg of the 4x400 meter relay that won with a time of 4:06.80.
Both Laramie track teams completed the two days with five event wins and ended up second and third, respectively at the regional track meet.
The Plainsmen finished runner-up in the team standings with 157 points, which was just seven behind the Sheridan Broncs on Friday and Saturday.
Their only other event victory came from senior Tyler Dahl in Saturday’s 400-meter finals. Dahl ran 49.64 seconds.
The Lady Plainsmen came in third place with 133 team points. Central won the team crown with 171.50 points, while Sheridan took second with 140.50 points.
The LHS girl’s fifth event win was in the 1600 Sprint Medley relay last Friday night. Laramie took first place with a time of 4:17.56, as they held off the Broncs by less than a second.
The Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen will prepare for the state track championships Thursday through Saturday in Casper.
Regional Soccer
After qualifying for the state tournament, both Laramie High School soccer teams finished in third place at the regional tournament in Gillette Saturday.
The Laramie boy’s and girl’s both lost in the regional semifinals Friday against Cheyenne Central by identical 1-0 scores.
The Lady Plainsmen came back with a 2-1 victory over Campbell County Saturday morning. Senior Lexi Pulley scored both goals, which included the game-winner in the 75th minute of action.
The Plainsmen responded to their loss with a defeat of Cheyenne East, 2-1. Senior’s Enrique Isidro and Alex Moreno scored in the last 17 minutes with Moreno’s the game-winner.
Both teams will be the East Conference No. 3 seed at the state soccer championships in Jackson Thursday through Saturday. The Laramie girls will play West No. 2 seed Jackson at 2 p.m., while the Laramie boys get West No. 2 seed Rock Springs at 4 p.m. Thursday in first-round state tournament games.
