For the second time this outdoor track and field season, Wyoming senior Damon Unland has received a weekly honor from the Mountain West Conference.

Unland was named the MW Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday. This came on the heels of winning another hammer throw competition at the CU Invitational last Saturday in Boulder. Unland won with a toss of 197 feet, 4 inches. His margin of victory was just over nine feet, as he topped his younger brother Kirk, who was runner-up at 188-3. This is the fifth victory in the last six outdoor meets for Damon Unland in the hammer throw.

Unland becomes the first Cowboy to earn a weekly honor multiple times in the same season since former UW standout and Olympian Mason Finley accomplished the feat in 2014, when he won it four times. Unland also received the same honor on March 27 after winning the hammer throw at a meet in Golden, CO.

Wyoming track and field returns to action Saturday at the NOCO Challenge in Greeley, CO.

The Wyoming men’s golf team finished in third place at their Cowboy Classic in Chandler, AZ earlier this week.

The Cowboys concluded three rounds Monday and Tuesday with a 17-under par total. That was five shots back of team champion UTSA (-22) and one behind runner-up Sam Houston State (-16).

Individually, senior Arron Lickteig and junior John Murdock led the way, as they tied for third place at 7-under par. That was four shots off the pace. UTSA’s Sean Meehan was the medalist at 11-under thanks to a birdie on his last hole.

Cowboy Golf returns to the links Saturday and Sunday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. It’s a 54-hole tournament in Tempe, AZ.
