Anchored by one of the best swimmers in the state, the Laramie Lady Plainsmen swim team enters the 2019 season as favorites in Class 4A.

Laramie is the two-time defending Class 4A State Champs. After a narrow win two years ago, the Lady Plainsmen dominated the field in 2018, as they won the state championship meet by 129 points.

The Lady Plainsmen return 14 state qualifiers and four All-State swimmers from last year.

Veteran head coach Tom Hudson is in his 29th year and begins his 59th season at LHS. He knows they are the team to beat in 2019. Hudson visited with KOWB’s David Settle about the season, their favorite role, other contenders, Olivia McPherson’s impact, and more.

McPherson won the 50 and 100 freestyle races individually in 2018 and anchored two victorious relays. The multi-time state champ and state record holder, as well as senior teammate Sage Morton, who Hudson says, is poised for a ‘breakout’ year, also chatted with Mr. Settle. They talked about their events and goals, the team having a ‘target’ on its back, plus some fun items.

Laramie starts its season with the Laramie Relays and Laramie Pentathlon at LHS Friday and Saturday. The meets start at 3 p.m. and 9 a.m., respectively.

The schedule does have the Lady Plainsmen on the road more this year. They will host two more home events in mid-September, but then don’t return home until the conference swim meet in mid-October. The state championships are in Gillette on Nov. 8 and 9.
