SFJAZZ at Buchanan Center
Tomorrow night, the SFJAZZ Collective out of San Francisco will perform “The Music of Michael Jackson” at 7:30 p.m. inside the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall as part of the UW Cultural Programs fall series.
Tickets are available online, at the Wyoming Union Information Desk, or by calling 766-6666. The cost is $25.50 for the public, $20.50 for senior citizens, and $10.50 for University of Wyoming students.
The award-winning SFJAZZ Collective was launched in 2004. Eight of today’s leading jazz composers and performers make up the group: Obed Calvaire, drums; Matt Penman, bass; Warren Wolf, vibraphone; Edward Simon, piano; Sean Jones, trumpet; Robin Eubanks, trombone; Miguel Zenón, alto saxophone; and David Sánchez, tenor saxophone. This is Jones’ first season with the group.
The Collective conducts a multi-week residency each spring in San Francisco. During rehearsals, the ensemble refines their new material and participates in education programs for youth and adults.
The SFJAZZ Collective is touring this year and next in a celebration of Michael Jackson’s music; the group is also performing their own original compositions. They have released only one studio album, but put out multiple limited edition CD sets. The studio album, “Wonder: The Songs of Stevie Wonder,” was declared the Outstanding Jazz Album at the 45th NAACP Image Awards.
