Authorities think a man who crashed off the Wind River Canyon road survived because he was wearing a seat belt.

The unidentified 61-year-old man from Manderson went through a guard rail while driving toward Thermopolis on Friday. His Ford truck ended up partially in the river and was found by a Hot Springs County sheriff’s deputy who noticed the broken guard rail.

The Associated Press reports  the truck fell about 40 feet and flipped several times.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating.
