The final dual of the season is here for the Laramie Plainsmen wrestling team, as they host the Cheyenne South Bison on Thursday.

The JV is at 5 p.m. followed by the senior recognition ceremony. Varsity is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., but if senior recognition gets done early, the varsity match will start ahead of time.

Laramie is 7-9 in duals this season. They’re searching for their third straight dual win to close out the regular season. They defeated Wheatland and Glenrock at Wheatland last Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022. The Plainsmen topped the Herder, 53-24, and the Bulldogs, 47-27.

LHS head coach Stuart Brinkman says South’s been having a rough season.

“They’ve been giving up anywhere from five to seven weight classes, so we’re looking to wrestle well in front of our home crowd.”

Brinkman admits they’re looking past this match to postseason wrestling the next two weeks.

“This week’s our peak week, where we’re really working hard. It’s kind of hard having a dual on a Thursday when we’re trying to break down bodies and make sure we’re feeling good for next week.”

Laramie begins the post-season next weekend.

It’s also Senior Night, as the six seniors will be recognized before the varsity match. Those seniors are Chris Alvarez, Michael Bingham, Fischer Hawkins, Connor Hobbs, Claire Knerr, and Jaxon Tilghman.

Brinkman said I was really excited about this senior class, even when they were freshmen.

“I knew they were hard workers, and we were going to get a lot out of them. What I’ve been impressed with is their hard work throughout the year. It’s not just during the season. It’s in the summertime. They’re going to national tournaments, so they’re always putting in that work. A lot of these wrestlers started as a freshman, and last year they were state placers.”

He’s hoping they can duplicate that success as a state placer or even a champion or finalist in a couple of weeks.

LHS will host the regional tournament for the 4A West Conference on Feb. 18 and 19, 2022.
