Gray, Clonch, and Curtin Lead Campbell County to State Softball Crown [VIDEOS]

The Campbell County Camels won the first-ever high school softball state title on May 22, 2021, with three wins in one day.

The Camels defeated Kelly Walsh and Cheyenne Central twice to win it all and make a little state history.

WyoPreps caught up with three players that played key roles for Campbell County during this inaugural season and at the state tournament. We visited with Avery Gray, Natalie Clonch, and Taylor Curtin after the two championship games in the video at the top of this story.

Clonch and Gray were all-state selections for the Camels, while Curtin was named second-team all-conference.

Gray hit .625 at the state tournament with 15 hits, including five extra-base hits, one of which was a home run. She had eight RBIs and scored 13 runs. Gray also was the starting pitcher in five of the six state tournament games and appeared on the rubber in all six. She pitched 37 innings and threw 651 pitches over the three days. She went 5-0 with a 5.486 earned run average. Gray allowed 41 runs, 29 earned, on 51 hits with 50 strikeouts and just 16 walks.

Clonch had a .583 batting average at the state tournament. She finished with 14 total hits, including a home run, a double, and three triples. The home run came during the second championship game. Clonch drove in nine runs and scored 11 times. She also had a team-high five stolen bases at the state tournament.

Curtin hit .400 with 10 total hits, a pair of doubles, and a triple. She had 11 RBI’s and scored 10 runs with three stolen bases.

Those were just three of the players that helped Campbell County win the state title. As a team, the Camels hit .478 at the state tournament. They produced 28 extra-base hits, which included nine triples and four home runs. They scored 79 runs in six games over three days. In 228 plate appearances, Campbell County had 17 walks and only 30 strikeouts.
