Wyoming Set for Big Showdown With the Aztecs [VIDEOS]
The path to the Mountain West Championship game isn’t an easy one, but the Wyoming Cowboys still control their own destiny.
In a battle of division leaders, the Wyoming Cowboys host No. 24 San Diego State Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. They are the second Top 25 ranked team to visit Laramie this season. The Pokes knocked off No. 13 Boise State on Oct. 29, 30-28.
Wyoming (7-3, 5-1) is coming off its first loss since Sept. 23 at Eastern Michigan. The triple OT set-back at UNLV last week has been difficult to absorb. It snapped a five-game win streak.
Senior D.J. May said they’ve got to let that go; move forward; get ready to play the Aztecs and understand what’s at stake.
With two games left to play, if the Cowboys win out they’ll play in the MW Championship for the first time. If they lose one of the next two games, UW can still make it with a Boise State loss to Air Force. There’s even a shot to host the title game in Laramie available.
San Diego State (9-1, 6-0) has already clinched the West Division and a spot in the MW Championship game for a second straight season.
Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl understands the situation and realizes they have to be at their best against the Aztecs.
This game pits the No. 1 scoring offense in the MW from UW, at 38.9 points per game, against the No. 1 scoring defense of San Diego State, at 15.2 points allowed per game. It also features two of the best running backs in the country in the Cowboys’ Brian Hill and the Aztecs’ Donnel Pumphrey.
San Diego State has won three of the last four games in the series. That includes a 38-3 victory in California last year. This will be the 36th meeting with Wyoming leading the overall series 18-17.
The game is also the regular-season home finale and will be ‘Senior Day’ for the Pokes. This group of 17 seniors will be recognized in an on-field ceremony prior to the game.
Kick-off is at 1:30 p.m. The game is available on TV through CBS Sports Network. You can also listen to the game in Laramie on KOWB (AM 1290).
