BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A lockdown at a North Dakota university has ended after authorities discovered the body of a college administrator who was last seen wandering near campus.

Dickinson Police Capt. Joe Cianni says 59-year-old Doug LaPlante was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

LaPlante was reported missing Friday. Police say Dickinson State University students were asked to go home because a rifle was missing from LaPlante’s home and he may have been distraught.

Cianni says LaPlante’s body was discovered Friday afternoon near a Dickinson intersection.

An audit critical of Dickinson State’s allegedly lax degree-granting practices with foreign students was made public Friday.

The audit doesn’t mention LaPlante. It says some affected students were business students. LaPlante was dean of Dickinson State’s college of education, business and applied sciences.
