Sad news, as famed author Toni Morrison has passed away in New York at the age of 88.

Denver 7 has the news this morning that famed writer, educator, and editor Toni Morrison has passed away at 88.

She was the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in 1993; she was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2012.

Her works included 'Beloved,' 'Sula,' and 'Song of Solomon.'

The news was released by her publisher, who gave no further statements as the cause of Morrison's death.
