On this day back in 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after lift off from Cape Canaveral. It killed all seven crew members including school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

The year was 1915 and on this day the United States Coast Guard was created as President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that merged the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service.

An official cease-fire went into effect in the Vietnam War on this day in 1973.
