Three people were killed Thursday night when the SUV they were riding in hit the trailer of a parked commercial truck at a high rate of speed.

According to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, 37-year-old Joseph Campbell of Rock Springs and four passengers were westbound on Interstate 80 in a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe on the evening of August 4.

At 7:45 p.m., about two miles east of Evanston, the Chevy was driven into a pull-off area at highway speed and crashed into the trailer of a parked 2009 International commercial truck.

Kari Koritnik, 37, of Rock Springs, was killed in the crash along with two unidentified people: a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both from Indian Springs, Nevada.

Campbell and a fourth passenger, an unidentified 27-year-old man from Conroe, Texas, were taken by helicopter to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. The man from Texas remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Serhiy Shkolniy, 48, of Sacramento, Calif., was in the sleeper berth of the parked truck at the time of the crash and was not injured.

Koritnik and the three unidentified passengers, who remain unnamed until authorities can notify their families, were not wearing seat belts. No word on whether Campbell was buckled up. Potential charges are pending.

The Patrol is investigating the lack of seat belt use along with alcohol and drug use as contributing factors in the crash.

Those killed were the 58th, 59th, and 60th people to die in a crash on Wyoming highways in 2016. The same time period in 2015 saw 92 such deaths statewide.
