The University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources has teamed up with the Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources to co-host a two day forum focused on hydraulic fracturing, also known as "fracking." The two day forum will be held September 26th-27th.

A controversial drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" has caused several concerns across the state of Wyoming. Hydraulic fracturing involves injecting a mixture of water and chemicals underground to extract oil, natural gas and coal. Concerns have been voiced about the side effects and of fracking and  if the drilling technique contaminates ground water.

The University of Wyoming's School of Energy Resources and Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources will be hosting a two day forum on hydraulic fracturing September 26th-27th in Laramie. The forum will be held at the UW Conference Center in the Hilton Garden Inn.

Presentations and topics to be discussed include:

  • educating participants on the technical aspects of the fracturing process (including purpose, technology, applications and results)
  • existing state and federal regulations relevant to hydraulic fracturing in Wyoming
  • potential environmental impacts associated with fracturing and activities directly related to its deployment
  • safety and environmental-best management practices used during fracturing
  • knowledge, data and technology gaps for future research
