Still Time To Get Wild Turkey For Thanksgiving

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Hunters still have a chance at that fresh, wild Thanksgiving turkey

Turkey season is open in most hunt areas of Wyoming and many of the locations are general license areas.

The state Game and Fish Department says some of the hunt areas close Nov. 30 while others stay open until Dec. 31.

Turkey licenses are $16 for residents and $72 for nonresidents.

Hunters can purchase general licenses over the counter and also on the Game and Fish website http://gf.state.wy.us .

Before the 1930′s, Wyoming did not have wild turkeys.

In 1935, Game and Fish trapped some sage grouse and traded them to New Mexico for 15 wild turkeys. The turkeys were released in the Laramie Peak area, and their population has dramatically increased since, mostly in northern and eastern Wyoming.
