LARAMIE -- San Jose State is the best team in the Mountain West, right?

Well, maybe. But the Spartans missed a golden opportunity Saturday to put a stranglehold on the West Division, falling to the Jake Heaner-less Fresno State Bulldogs, 17-10.

We all thought Brent Brennan's team would roll. We were all wrong. SJSU is still atop the standings, but San Diego State, Fresno State, Hawaii and even UNLV are still in the race.

Seven of us thought New Mexico would bounce back and take out its rivals in Las Cruces. Jared Newland was the only one to take a chance on the Aggies.

Smart or lucky?

I'll go with the latter.

Matt Wildt, one of our guest pickers, who used to work in the Wyoming athletics department, thought Colorado State would ride momentum from its first victory of the season over Nevada. He was the only one who had any faith in the Rams against visiting Utah State. That didn't pay off. CSU would fall to the defending Mountain West champions, 17-13.

Michael "Mad Dog" Aanonsen, UW's longtime head equipment manager, was the only one of us who thought LSU could go into The Swamp and take down Florida. He was right.
