September marks the 30th anniversary of the rediscovery of black footed ferrets in the Wild. The last population of black footed ferrets was thought to have been lost in the late 1970's. In 1981 a population of  ferrets were discovered in the Meeteetse, WY area when a dog caught a ferret and brought it home.

The last remaining population of wild black footed ferrets was thought to have disappeared in South Dakota in the late 1970's. After the dog brought home the ferret in 1981 it lead to a search and discovery. The extensive search lead officials to the discovery of a thriving population of wild black footed ferrets. Since then black footed ferret numbers have continued to hold steady.

Now there are several populations that have been established in Wyoming and several other states in the West. To mark the 30th anniversary of the rediscovery, Wyoming Game and Fish Department will host tours of the rediscovery area on September 24th-25th.
