Memorial Race to be Held on 10th Anniversary of Wyoming Cross Country Tragedy

The "Memory of the 8 Memorial Run/Walk" will be on Friday, Sept. 16 in honor of the University of Wyoming cross country runners who died in a car accident 10 years ago on Sept. 16, 2001: Morgan McLeland, Cody Brown, Kyle Johnson, Josh Jones, Justin Lambert-Belanger, Kevin Salverson, Nick Schabron and Shane Shatto.

The Memorial Run/Walk is scheduled to begin in Gillette, Wyo. at 5:00 p.m. for walkers and 5:30 p.m. for runners. The race is co-sponsored by the Razor City Runners and the family of Morgan McLeland.  The McLeland family are natives of Gillette.

This memorial run is a wonderful way for people to honor our eight former Cowboys.  The people of Gillette have put a lot of effort into organizing this event, and we encourage people to support this worthwhile tribute to the memory of these young men.

Registration is available online by clicking here and will also be available on site the day of the race at 4:30 p.m. There is no registration fee, but donations will be accepted.  Donations will go to help cover costs of the event, as well as to fund runners’ scholarships for college-bound athletes and provide shoes for low socioeconomic children in Campbell County, Wyo.

The location for the race will be M&K Oil, South 4J Road, in Gillette.  The route will include an eight-mile, figure-8 loop for runners and a 5K walk.  There will be a barbecue and social following the event.

In Laramie, the "Always A Cowboy" 8k run and 5k walk will be held on Saturday, September 10. Race day registration will be available at Undine Park beginning at 7:00 a.m. with the race starting at 9:00 a.m. Preregistration is available at Gem City Bone and Joint Physical Therapy through Sept. 7.
