Medical Marijuana Initiative Might Have to Wait Until 2018
With just over five weeks until the deadline, Carrie Satterwhite, public relations director for the Wyoming chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) says the Board of Directors has talked about focusing instead on the 2018 ballot.
“We did discuss that we may have to take advantage of the full eighteen-month period afforded us by the rules in Wyoming, just so that we can make sure we have the right amount of signatures,” says Satterwhite.
The group must submit 25,673 signatures of registered voters to the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office no later than Feb. 8 to get the initiative on the 2016 ballot.
If Wyoming NORML elects to target the 2018 ballot instead, the organization would have until Feb. 2017 to collect the same number of signatures.
Satterwhite says the organization still hopes to get their Peggy A. Kelly Cannabis Act to legalize medical marijuana in Wyoming on the 2016 general election ballot, despite recent turmoil within the group that has hindered the petition effort.
“We haven’t officially said that we are going to go for the 2018 ballot,” says Satterwhite. “But we do feel either way if it goes on the 2016 ballot or the 2018 ballot that it will pass.”
“There’s plenty of support in Wyoming for it,” says Satterwhite.
