Investigations are underway for the death of a twenty four year old Laramie man whose car was found in Spring Creek New Year's morning. Police are searching for answers as to why Andrew Hammond went off the road, and why he did not seek out help.

Andrew Hammond was found Saturday morning inside of his Nissan Xterra which had gone off the road at seventh and Spring Creek on New Years Day. Police were notified of the vehicle's location around 6:45am. The car had gone off the road and was resting in approximately 20-30 inches of frigid water and Hammond was found inside.

Commander Mitch Cushman said, "the incident occurred between the hours of 10pm and 6am." Reports state Hammond had appeared injured from the accident, but evidence shows he was conscious and had walked around after the crash. It was also reported that Hammond was not wearing a coat or winter attire but was found with a cell phone.

County Coroner Tom Furgeson stated, "We did a physical examination and, by appearances, given the scene and the body itself, it appears to be exposure." The coroner's office has to wait for toxicology reports to determine if Hammond had alcohol or drugs in his system. Toxicology reports can take approximately two to four weeks. At that time a final report will be released.

The cause of death is still uncertain, internal injuries may have occurred, and exposure to the frigid water and sub-zero wind chills are all defining factors. Commander Cushman said police found a small amount of blood on the steering wheel. So far investigations show that Hammond was driving at or near the posted speed limit when the Xterra went off the road. It is also stated that Hammond may have tried to drive the car out of the creek but stayed in his car after he learned the car was stuck. It is still uncertain as to why Hammond did not use his cell phone to call for help.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lusk Wyoming.
