The Laramie Lady Plainsmen won the Wyoming State High School Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Douglas. Three Lady Plainsmen runners finished in the top ten to edge out Campbell County by two points. The boys team earned a third place finish with two runners in the top ten.

The head cross country coach, Greg Schabron, joined David Settle and Jake Anfinson on Sportsline Live Tuesday to talk about how the girls team was able to come up with the first ever state cross country team championship for Laramie High School. Listen to the full interview below.

The girls just came ready to run. What helped them out, they always had that goal of a state championship since the beginning of the year, but when they were able to surprise Gillette in South Dakota that just really got their fire started. Then they decided, 'alright it really is possible.'  Then last week we were back by 19 points, but in all reality, the bigger the races with more people in the race, the better the girls do because they have such depth.

This has been really special for the coaching staff. This is the first crew that we've worked with freshman through senior year. So for them to accomplish this, it's something that not only the coaching staff has been trying to do, but these girls for the last four years. I think, especially for those seniors to really step up and lead the team, it kind of sets the standard and expectations, hopefully for teams to come. After a great race on Saturday, they realized hard work does pay off and we just have to be patient and never give up no matter what happens throughout the season.
