A project to eventually replace the Interstate 80/Interstate 25 interchange near Cheyenne is in the very preliminary planning stage at this point, according to a WYDOT spokesman.

Matt Murphy says WYDOT hopes to have the design process 60 percent completed by 2022. At that point, the agency hopes to be able to apply for federal grants to help build the interchange.

Because the eventual cost is likely to be in the $200 million range, the cost of building the interchange would just be too expensive without some outside funding sources. The interchange is needed because the existing interchange is rapidly becoming outdated and was designed to meet the needs of interstate traffic in the 1960s, according to Murphy.
