Governor Mead Signs Proclamation Creating First Veterans Welcome Home Day

Today, Governor Matt Mead signed the proclamation to set aside March 30, 2011 to thank Korean War, Vietnam War, and other veterans in an appropriate manner and to honor those members of the United States armed forces who were not properly welcomed home following their military service.

The Governor’s proclamation is part of legislation passed by the Wyoming Legislature this year. It designates March 30^th of each year as the Wyoming Veterans Welcome Home Day.

Governor Mead will participate in community Welcome Home events on March 30^th in Cheyenne, Casper and Cody. Those ceremonies will include a welcome home line that mirrors what is done today when soldiers come home. The veterans will walk through a line and be thanked for their service by state leaders.

This proclamation is something Governor Mead was proud to sign and he looks forward to participating in events this month. “Some of these soldiers, who made such huge sacrifices for our country, came home to anger and hostility instead of coming home to applause,” Governor Mead said. “It is never too late to do the right thing, and we are doing the right thing by holding this event to say thank you.”
