Question:

I want to store gasoline for possible power outages during the winter. I don't have any stored currently, but are there any laws I should know about how much I can store and where I can store it?

Answer:

"When it comes to storing highly flammable liquids, such as gasoline, many of the answers surrounding storage greatly depend on the specifics of the situation. Assuming this question relates to residential use, there are very few governmental restrictions (including city and state imposed on private, single-family dwellings.

The following guidelines can assist you in safely storing such flammable liquids"

  • Flammable liquids should always remain in a sealed, approved container labeled for the product it contains.
  • Flammable liquids should never be stored inside the residence.
  • If stored in a garage or shed, the area should be well ventilated, with no sources of ignition exposed to vapors emitted from the flammable liquid.
  • Do not store gasoline, or any other flammable liquids near the generator.
  • Do not operate the generator in an enclosed space.
  • Do not add fuel to the generator while it is running.
