A natural gas leak has caused the temporary closure of Ninth Street between Harney and Gibbon.

Norm Long, Wyoming Community and Government Affairs Manager for Source Gas, says there is no estimate as to how long the closure will last. Long says the gas leak has been located. Crews are currently isolating the leak and are in the process of making repairs.

Long says gas from the leak was found in the city’s sewer line. The leak was apparently caused by a fence post which punctured a gas line. The fence post was located on a homeowner’s property.

Long says this serves as a reminder to call before you dig. Wyoming state law requires people to call the one-call service provider at least two days before digging. To contact one-call, dial 811 or 1-800-849-2476. According to the Wyoming Public Service Commission website, anyone who does not call and damages an underground facility may be liable for the damage and could be fined up to $5,000.

Long says Source Gas continues to monitor the area. He says public safety is the main concern and they are working to keep the community safe.
