Cowgirls Seniors Go Out With A Bang
Four Cowgirls scored in double figures and Wyoming sent their senior class out on a high note with an 85-56 victory over San Jose State Monday night in Laramie.
Marta Gomez scored 21 points, 17 in the third quarter, to lead UW. Bailee Cotton added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshmen Quinn Weidemann and Karla Erjavec also had big games. Weidemann added 17 points off the bench, while Erjavec recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
Five of the six seniors scored in the game, as UW led from start to finish.
Wyoming (20-6, 14-3) clinched at least the No. 3 seed in the Mountain West Conference tournament thanks to this win and Boise State’s victory over New Mexico Monday night in Idaho. This marked the third straight season with 20 wins or more, and it’s also the third straight season of at least 13 conference wins for the Cowgirls. That makes this senior class the winningest class for Wyoming in MW games.
UW jumped out 9-2 in the first two minutes, as they overcame the emotions of Senior Night quickly. Erjavec scored five points and Cotton had the other four. The lead grew to 13 points twice before it was 25-15 after the first. San Jose State hung around in the second quarter, as they out-scored the Cowgirls 15-12. The Spartans man-to-man defense held UW down, as Wyoming shot just 35 percent in the quarter. The Cowgirls still led 37-30 at halftime.
Gomez exploded in the third quarter. She scored 15 straight points for Wyoming, which included three triples. UW went on a 17-4 run and opened up a 54-36 lead. It was 62-44, as the fourth quarter began. The Cowgirls ran away with it, as they out-scored San Jose State, 23-12, in the last period. The final scored was the biggest lead for the Cowgirls.
Wyoming shot 51 percent in the game. They were 11-25 (44%) from deep. The Cowgirls enjoyed a 40-27 edge on the glass. They finished with 27 assists on 33 field goals and scored 15 points off 14 Spartan turnovers.
San Jose State (5-23, 4-13) was led by Raziya Potter with 14 points. They shot 41 percent in the game but were held to 29 percent (5-17) from deep.
The Cowgirls close out their regular season at New Mexico Thursday at 7 p.m. from The Pit in Albuquerque.
