Cowgirls Season Ends Against UNLV Again
It came down a third set at number six singles, and the Wyoming Cowgirls fell short in a 4-3 loss to UNLV at the Mountain West Tennis Championships Saturday.
This marked the second consecutive year UW’s season ended in the MW tournament semis against the Rebels and by an identical 4-3 score.
The Cowgirls got off to an excellent start with a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles from the duos of Jonas/Tkachenko and Genkova/Stencel in Las Vegas.
UNLV (18-7) responded with victories at the top three singles spots and all in straight sets.
The Cowgirls picked up wins from Milka Genkova at No. 4 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 and also at No. 5 singles by Elisa Koonik. Her scores were 6-4 and 6-4.
Ana Tkachenko started her singles match with a hard fought 7-5 score in set one, but the Rebels’ Jovana Kencic responded and took the last two sets, 6-3 and 6-1 to put UNLV over the top.
Wyoming head coach Dean Clower was certainly pleased with the effort in a release from the university.
“I’m proud of the way we got after it today. We did things our way, played our style and gave ourselves chances which is all we can ask for. This team has developed all season long on and off the court as teammates and leaders. They played 22 matches this spring and give everything they could for one another, themselves and the university. We should all be proud of them, I know I am. Thanks to our great supporters who made the trip down to come battled it out with us. I can promise you this, we will be back and give ourselves more chances to win the MW.”
The Cowgirls finished the season with an overall mark of 18-4, which is a program record for wins in a single-season.
